There are 3 elements in a link that SEO can use, anchor text, title and URL, the URL is your web page address, the title is the tool tip (when mouse over the link) and the anchor text is the actual link text.

  • Internal Links - Links between your web pages (e.g. navigation bar etc.), use keywords in anchor text and title attributes.
  • Inbound Links - Links from other website to your web pages, links from pages with high page ranking contribute more to your page ranking.
  • Links from similar sites - links from similar sites are very useful. It indicates that the competition is voting for you and you are popular within your topical community.
  • Links from .edu or .gov - links from .edu and .gov sites are more reputable than others and very hard to obtain.
  • Outbound Links - links from your page to other website, try to have more inbound links than outbound link on any page and avoid linking to links farm.
  • Back links - is generally refer to all the links to your website and generally the more, the better. But the reputation of the sites that link to you is more important than their number.
  • Link age - the older, the better. Getting many new links in a short time suggests buying them.
  • Link farms - a link farm is any group of web sites that all hyper link to every other site in the group, it will not add any value.
  • Invisible Links - links that are invisible to human eye, links that use a single pixel image or link text with same color as background, Search engine do not like that and you might get penalized.
